Hello! Welcome to my blog about my year abroad with UGA’s Portuguese Flagship Program.

My name is Emma Gough, and I’m currently a Junior at the University of Georgia, located in Athens, GA. I’m working on an Accounting and International Business double major with a minor in Portuguese. If I’m not busy studying (which is rarely these days), I’m probably working at Chick-Fil-A or practicing karate.

After 12 years of homeschooling, I graduated in 2016 and went to Kennesaw State University (KSU) still undecided on my major. With the guidance of a few kind professors, I made my way to the business college and eventually transferred to the University of Georgia to study accounting.

During high school and first year in college, I participated in various international karate competitions. In late 2015, the US Karate Team traveled to Natal, Brasil (a coastal city in the north) for the Pan American Championship. This was my first encounter with the Brazilian culture and people. The rest is history.

I picked up Portuguese classes in my first semester of college and haven’t stopped practicing since. By the end of this year, I will finish my Portuguese minor and earn superior level proficiency certification upon my return to the States in December.

Meet my Family…

When school’s out, I head home to Smyrna (located just outside of Atlanta) and spend time with my wonderful family. We love frequenting nearby restaurants, traveling to the beach, our church, and our cat named Captain Jack. Three of us are voracious readers. They call me their project in regards to this.

My family is made of lovely people and I miss them dearly. I am so very grateful for their support in all of my various endeavors. If you happen to see any of them, give them a hug from me… they miss me almost as much as I do them.
